Description
The Marzocco – the seated lion holding the shield with the lily of Florence – has been one of the symbols of Florence since the Middle Ages. The most famous depiction of the Marzocco, that inspired this sculpture, is the work of Donatello exhibited at the Bargello Museum and a copy in its original location in front of Palazzo Vecchio in Florence.
The lion is hand carved in natural wood.
