Convex mirror, surrounded by a precious Federal Style frame embellished with a majestic eagle.
Convex mirror, surrounded by a precious Federal Style frame featuring the sculpture of a majestic American eagle, symbol of the American Federal style, which characterizes it when compared to similar and contemporary Empire or Regency styles.
Convex mirrors have been considered “magic mirrors” since their first appearance in the Renaissance, due to their “supernatural” ability to reflect a complete image of the room they are placed in. Also known as “witch’s eyes” (from the French Oeil de sorcière) and “bankers’ mirrors”, they had great fortune in the history of art: from the famous “Portrait of the Arnolfini spouses” by Jan Van Eyck, passing through Parmigianino and Caravaggio, up to Man Ray.
